TH3/TM3 respiratory protection

TH3 and TM3 are protection classes for powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) under European standards. In both cases the blower unit supplies filtered air with enough airflow and positive pressure to keep contaminants out of the breathing zone. The classes differ in the type of facepiece.

TH3 — loose-fitting facepieces

The TH class is defined in EN 12941 for hoods, helmets and visors that do not need to seal tightly against the face — this also covers the ventilated fabric half mask of swiss air. No fit test and no shaving are required, which makes TH3 ideal where comfort and freedom of movement matter, for example for welders, construction workers and industrial users.

TM3 — tight-fitting masks

The TM class is defined in EN 12942 for full and half masks that seal directly against the face. They require a fit test and clean-shaven skin, but their close fit generally gives a more even seal. TM3 is the choice for environments with extremely high exposure, such as chemical processing, handling hazardous materials or tunnel construction.

TH3 protection is provided by e3000X and swiss air; TM3 by swiss air with the tight-fit silicone half mask, used in line with the manufacturer’s requirements. The airflow also supports breathing and removes breathing resistance, which reduces fatigue over long shifts.
