How to choose an auto-darkening welding helmet

An auto-darkening helmet protects your eyes and face from arc radiation, and the filter switches from the light to the dark state the moment you strike the arc. Look at a few key specifications — you will find them in each model's technical data and in the helmet comparison.

Light state and true-colour view

The lower the shade level in the light state, the better you see before welding and between welds. Filters with crystal lens technology (CLT) have a light state of 2.0 and render colours faithfully, which makes it easier to read the weld pool and temper colours, for example in TIG. The light state is 2.5 in the 2.5 models and 3.0 in the quattro models.

Shade range

The right shade level depends on the welding process and the current. ShadeTronic® filters set it automatically, and a wide range — such as 4–13 on the panoramaxx quattro — covers both low-amperage TIG and high-amperage MIG/MAG.

Optical class to EN 379

The four digits stand for optical class, diffusion of light, homogeneity and angle dependence; 1 is the best rating. The quattro models are rated 1/1/1/1, so the view stays clear even when you look at an angle.

Field of view, weight and comfort

Helmets with the Panorama-XXL field of view (panoramaxx and helix series) show far more of your surroundings than a standard filter. For a full shift, weight matters too — from 360 g for the weldcap to around 640 g for the large-view models — as does the headgear, such as IsoFit®. If your workplace requires a hard hat, choose a version with an industrial safety helmet or an adapter.

Respiratory protection

For long welding sessions and poorly ventilated areas, consider a PAPR welding helmet or the swiss air system, which works with any helmet in this category.
